Klinger to be inducted into the Watsonia Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Local rock group Klinger are reportedly set to be inducted into the Watsonia Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and are being described as our suburb’s greatest ever rock export. Despite having two songs in Triple J’s Hottest 100 in the year 2000, and once supporting Green Day on tour, Klinger is best known for the multiple Watsonia references in their songs.
The band, most active between 1996 and 2003, notably released a song called “Watsonia” on their aptly named EP Grimshaw St. And while the song seems to express a love/hate relationship with our fine suburb, including the lyric “Watsonia, nothing ever happens here”, it undoubtedly put us on the rock and roll map, and included such geographically accurate references as “Grimshaw Street intersects you, And takes me to Bundoora, Or the bright lights of Greensborough”. While that song failed to adequately encapsulate the thriving retail strip of Watsonia Road, only mentioning a “Strip of shops and houses”, we can only assume that the Watsy Shops were not as vibrant back in the year 2000.
